James Meredith’s Library Tour
Jackson – Civil Rights activist, James Meredith, who gained national renown when he became the first African
American student at the University of Mississippi, has long valued the importance of libraries. He personally
credits much of his academic success at Ole Miss to his use of libraries on U.S. Air Force bases in Nebraska
and Japan where he was stationed prior to his return to Mississippi in 1960.
Meredith believes public libraries can provide everyone with the tools to be a better person, and he hopes that
his tour of the Jackson Hinds Library System (JHLS) will encourage everyone to get a free library card and
use it, as he does frequently.
He is embarking on a tour of the 14 libraries in JHLS to particularly bring attention to the many advantages
that public libraries can offer, especially to African American families in Mississippi. “I believe that this is one of the most important things that I have ever done in my life” Meredith shares, “And I want everyone to hear
this message.”
Meredith’s tour will take him to the smaller county libraries, as well as the larger city libraries. Executive Director Patty Furr comments, “We are so pleased to be able to offer the public a chance to hear James Meredith speak in each of our libraries. We invite everyone to come out and hear his message.” This is also
an opportunity for all Hinds County residents to join JHLS and get a free library card or to renew an expired
card.
The programs will also include an opportunity for Meredith to talk about his book Three Years In Mississippi which has been recently reissued by University Press of Mississippi with an introduction by Aram Goudsouzian. Three Years in Mississippi will be available at each program.
