If you’re looking for exciting activities and programs that can help your children keep reading this summer, the Jackson Hinds Library System’s Summer Reading Program is only a short drive or bus ride away.

illustration of rocket launching from open bookThe library has planned a wide array of free, live events on the theme ‘A Universe of Stories’ for local area children, teens, and adults throughout Hinds County. There are well over 200 free reading-related programs starting June 3rd and continuing to July 12th in our 14 library branches.

“This year’s theme, ‘A Universe of Stories’ has inspired library staff to design exciting space related craft activities, programs, reading activities, and to choose theme related movies to show.

The sessions will also focus on environmental issues.” Furr continued, “We invite all Hinds County kids, teens, and adults to attend these wonderful programs and to read as many books as they can this summer. Studies show that students who keep reading all summer long will start school ready to learn and carry their higher reading scores from summer in the fall.”

Prizes will be given to the top readers at each of the 14 library branches, and every participant will receive a treat bag with coupons from local restaurants and other retailers. Furr comments, “We want to thank our many donors for supporting the Summer Reading Program. We honestly could not have the high-quality programs that we offer without their generous support and donations.”

For more information, you can stop by your local library branch for a branch calendar and the Summer Reading Program booklets, which will be out in April. The information will also be featured online at the Jackson Hinds Library System’s website, www.jhlibrary.org. Seats for many events are limited, so everyone is urged to come early to make sure they get a place.
