The Jackson Hinds Library System has several programs at our library branches this month in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Please contact the respective library branch if you have questions about any of the programs listed below.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest
Eudora Welty Library | January 13, 2020 - February 21, 2020 | Events for School Aged Children
Theme: "Dreaming for a Better Future"

From January 13-February 21, children in grades 6-12 may submit a five-paragraph essay response to one of the essay topics in the guidelines (see PDF). Prizes of $25, $10, and $5 will be offered to the highest-scored essays.

MLK Coloring Contest (Open to All Youth)
Lois A. Flagg Library of Edwards | January 13, 2020 - January 21, 2020 | Events for School Aged Children
To celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., kids are encouraged to participate in a coloring contest. The contest will begin on Jan. 13th and end on Jan. 21st at 9:00 AM. The winner will be contacted by the 23rd. The best coloring contestant will win a special prize.

MLK Movie Memorial
Bolden Moore Library | January 16, 2020 | Events for All Ages
On Thursday, January 16th at 3:00 PM, the Bolden Moore Library will screen a film dedicated to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King and his work in the struggle for civil rights. All families are invited to attend, and popcorn and refreshments will be served. If you have any questions, please contact the Bolden Moore Library at 601-922-6076.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest
Medgar Evers Library | January 17, 2020 | Events for School Aged Children

In tribute to the legacy of Dr. King, the Medgar Evers Library will host a essay contest for students in grades K-12. This year, we ask the students to reflect on the following theme: "Living Dr. King's Dream: Matters in 2020!"

During the program, contestants will read their essays aloud to a panel of judges who will select award recipients based on several categories.

Registration is required and more information is available at the library. The essay submission period ends January 15 at noon. Please call 601-982-2867 with questions. Refreshments will be served. This program is for all ages.

Craft: "We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike." Make a multicultural crown of peace and friendship; discuss friends and family through the "Human Family" poem and life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
