The Beverly J. Brown Library at 7395 South Siwell Road in Byram, Mississippi will be closing on November 30, 2019, so that the library can be relocated to a temporary facility on Terry Road sometime in the New Year. The Library Board of Trustees approved the closure at its October 22nd meeting. The move is necessary as the demand for library services has greatly outgrown the present facility, and the location on Siwell Road has become more and more difficult to access due to the increased commercial growth and traffic patterns in the area. The current building is owned by the Hinds County School Board and the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, which voted to close the current location at a board meeting earlier this month. The City of Byram will partner with the Jackson Hinds Library System to design and open a temporary library behind the City Hall on Terry Road until a much larger permanent facility can be opened. During this transition, Byram Library customers are encouraged to use the Ella Bess Austin Library in Terry at 420 West Cunningham Road in Terry, Mississippi, while the temporary library is being prepared and set up on Terry Road.
Library Director Patty Furr comments, "The Byram Library is one of our busiest Hinds County libraries having 41,878 patron visits and 19,452 items circulated in the 2018 service year. The demand for service has simply outgrown the present building. Library administrators have been concerned for some time about our customers having to navigate through the increased traffic on Siwell Road, and we are delighted to partner with the City of Byram to relocate the library to a safer temporary location on Terry Road behind the present Byram City Hall at 5909 Terry Road in Byram, which will be open sometime after the New Year. We know that our customers will miss having a library in Byram, but the Terry Library is certainly within easy driving distance and offers very similar services to the Byram Library. Some of the Byram staff will be working at the Austin Library in Terry so that our customers will see a familiar face and have help navigating a new building. We look forward to a bright future for our Byram Library customers as we grow to meet the demand for library services in this area of Hinds County. We encourage everyone to watch our library website and social media feeds for information about the reopening of the library in the new temporary facility. Questions can be directed to the Jackson Hinds Library System Administrative Staff at 601-968-5825."
