About Medgar Evers Library

The Medgar Evers Library, which was named for the Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers, is located in northwest Jackson. The library celebrates the Medgar Evers Homecoming each June, and a historic statue of Evers is located on the library grounds. The library also hosts the annual Juneteenth Celebration.
We have Summer Reading Programs, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest, the annual Health Fair, Storytime Wednesdays and Fantastic Friday Storytimes at 10:00 AM, teen programs, and Showtime Movie Matinees every Saturday at 11:00 AM. The English as a Second Language class consists of lessons and activities designed to primarily improve English conversational skills. Listening and comprehension will be achieved through an all-English immersive environment.

English language learners of various levels are welcome. Adolescents, adults, and senior adults are all welcome. Registration at the Medgar Evers Library is required. The ESL classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Medgar Evers Library from 2:30-3:30 PM. Mr. James Hampton is the instructor.

The Metro Jackson Section of the National Council for Negro Women conducts the program. Girls Who Code (GWC) is a national computer coding program that has been in operation for the last seven years to train girls how to code. Registration is required to participate.

Chess Club - It's your move! Want to increase your memory and concentration or practice logical thinking skills? Instruction is offered the first half hour for beginners followed by an hour of play for attendees of all levels at the Medgar Evers Library. Chess boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning. This is a recurring event and takes place on Saturdays at 2:00 PM. Teens! Come join the Spark-O-Matic Robotics Club! This STEM education program, aligns the skills and knowledge needed to bridge the gap between secondary education and college/career success. Students develop critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills while utilizing real-world applications. In addition, teens are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Teens meet every Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Medgar Evers Library. Join today!

Patrons, come learn to speak Spanish! This Spanish language program is a course in which patrons will get exposure to basic Spanish. Through fun games and instruction, students will learn the fundamentals of reading, writing, and conversation in a friendly environment. All levels are welcome to attend.

The Spanish classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 PM-3:30 PM. Registration is required.

Do you have homework assignments or a project due? The purpose of the Homework Club program is to provide K-4th grade students with a resource for completing daily school assignments and special projects during the academic year. Beginner yoga classes will be held at the Medgar Evers Library every Tuesday evening from 5:30 PM-6:30 PM. La'Desha Jones of Eternal Yoga is the instructor. This program is for teens and adults. Yoga mats will be provided (up to 10 mats) with water.

SLOTS ARE NOW FULL.

The program by the Institute of Southern Jewish Life is a six-week literacy program designed for families with children ages 6-10 to learn, play, read and grow together. Includes fun literacy activities, storytelling, writing workshops, parent workshops and lunch. Parents will also receive information and resources from local agencies.

NOTE: The weekly Movie Matinee will be held on Thursdays at 3:30 PM while the program is in session.

Come play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at the Medgar Evers Library and play Bookopoly from January 11 through February 29. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our website or getting out into the community.

Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a small prize. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win the GRAND prize! The contest ends February 29 and all prizes will be awarded on March 7. For adults and teens.

Have a love of superheroes, illustrated literature, or just an interest in comic books and manga?

Come join us at the Medgar Evers Library on the second and fourth Saturday of every month for our new Teen Comic Book Club, "The Brick X Wall"! Teens will read and discuss a new graphic novel, comic book or manga title each month.

There will also be discussions about movies based on comics! To get a copy of this month's title, swing by the Medgar Evers Library today!

The Medgar Evers Library will host a Black History Month program on February 5th at 3:30 PM. Mr. John Spann of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum will speak on Medgar Evers' life, his legacy and the impact he had on the civil rights movement. Please join us!

February 07, 2020 | Events for Tweens or Teens

The Medgar Evers Library will host the program at 3:30 PM to celebrate George Crum, the inventor of the potato chip. Tweens and teens will get to taste test different potato chips and learn some potato chip trivia. There will also be potato chip themed activities and crafts! We'll see you there!

February 13, 2020 | Movie Events

No movie this Saturday due to a special program, so come out this Thursday at 3:30 PM. Call for the movie title. Free popcorn will be served.

February 15, 2020 | Events for All Ages

Show off your knowledge of black history by playing two family favorite games at once! Come play Black History Trivia Bingo and make a button or magnet of your favorite African American.
