Jackson, MS, January 12, 2023 – City of Jackson Announces Insurance Settlement
The Jackson-Hinds Library System is excited to hear that the City’s litigation with its insurers has been resolved for more than $10 million. We commend the City Attorney’s office for its work to obtain this settlement. As our patrons know too well, the Library–particularly our defunct headquarters in the downtown Eudora Welty branch–was severely impacted by this storm and the subsequent deterioration of the buildings. Today, the Welty branch is being prepared for demolition, leaving the citizens of Jackson and Hinds County without a headquarters library downtown for the first time in the System’s more-than-100-year history. We hope that the funds from this settlement can be utilized to help reestablish a vibrant central library in downtown Jackson, and to bring stability to the Jackson-Hinds Library System’s ailing facilities. We look forward to working closely with the City in the days ahead.

We currently operate under our historic 1986 City/County agreement, but our history dates to our original Jackson Carnegie Library founding in 1910.
